Thailand Rules & Etiquette
Laws every Bangladeshi in Thailand should know — visa and overstay, the Royal Family, traffic, banned items, alcohol and good behaviour.
Thailand is welcoming, but some laws here are strict and very different from Bangladesh. Knowing them keeps you, your visa and your family safe.
01 Visa, overstay & reporting
Overstay fine
500 baht per day, up to a maximum of 20,000 baht. Pay at the airport or immigration office before you leave.
90-day report
If you stay in Thailand longer than 90 days on a long-stay visa, report your address to immigration every 90 days (online or in person). Late: usually 2,000 baht; found without reporting: 4,000–5,000 baht.
TM30 address report
Your landlord, hotel or host must report where you live within 24 hours of your arrival. Ask them for the receipt — you need it for visa extensions.
Work permit
Foreigners may only work with a work permit, and some jobs are reserved for Thai citizens. Working without one can mean a fine, deportation and a ban — for both worker and employer.
Re-entry bans for overstaying
| Overstay | You report yourself when leaving | Caught by police / immigration |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 90 days | Fine only, no ban | 5-year ban |
| More than 90 days | 1-year ban | 5-year ban |
| More than 1 year | 3-year ban | 10-year ban |
| More than 3 years | 5-year ban | 10-year ban |
| More than 5 years | 10-year ban | 10-year ban |
Always carry your passport (or at least a clear copy of the photo and visa pages, with the original nearby). Police and immigration can ask for it at any time.
02 The Royal Family & national symbols
- Never criticise, joke about or share memes of the Royal Family — online or offline.
- Do not damage, step on or deface pictures of the King, including on banknotes and coins. If a note falls, do not stop it with your foot.
- The royal anthem plays before films in cinemas — stand up quietly until it ends.
- The national anthem plays at 8:00 am and 6:00 pm in public places, parks and stations. Stop walking and stand still until it finishes.
- Show respect to the national flag, royal portraits and royal processions.
03 Traffic rules
Since 1 April 2026 the police strictly enforce higher fines for 10 main offences. Driving here is on the left, like Bangladesh.
| Offence | Penalty |
|---|---|
| Drink driving | 5,000–20,000 baht and up to 1 year in prison |
| Dangerous / reckless driving | 5,000–20,000 baht and up to 1 year in prison |
| Speeding | Up to 4,000 baht |
| Running a red light | Up to 4,000 baht |
| Not stopping for pedestrians at a zebra crossing | Up to 4,000 baht |
| Using a phone while driving (without hands-free) | Up to 4,000 baht |
| Driving against traffic | Up to 2,000 baht |
| No helmet — rider and passenger | Up to 2,000 baht |
| No seat belt — driver and passengers | Up to 2,000 baht |
| Not carrying your driving licence | Up to 1,000 baht, possible 1 month in prison |
- You need a Thai driving licence or a valid International Driving Permit with your home licence — and a motorcycle category to ride a motorbike.
- Most travel insurance does not pay for accidents if you rode without a licence or helmet.
- If you have an accident, stay calm, do not argue, call the police (191) and the TBC hotline.
04 Strictly banned
Vapes / e-cigarettes
Illegal to bring in, sell, buy or use. You can be arrested, fined several times the value of the item, or jailed. Do not bring them from Bangladesh or the airport duty-free.
Drugs
Penalties are extremely severe — long prison sentences for possession, and up to life imprisonment or death for trafficking. Never carry a bag or parcel for someone else.
Cannabis
Since 25 June 2025 cannabis is medical use only, with a prescription from a licensed Thai doctor. Smoking in public: fine up to 25,000 baht and up to 3 months in prison. Never bring it into or out of Thailand.
Gambling
Casinos, card games for money and online betting are illegal. Police raid gambling rooms — players are arrested too, not just organisers.
05 Alcohol
- Shops (7-Eleven, supermarkets) may sell alcohol only from 11:00 am–2:00 pm and 5:00 pm–midnight. Restaurants may also serve in the afternoon.
- Drinking in a venue outside legal hours: the customer can be fined up to 10,000 baht.
- No drinking at temples, schools, universities, hospitals, petrol stations or government offices.
- Alcohol sales are banned on major Buddhist holidays and on election days — check the news before a holiday.
- You must be 20 or older to buy alcohol.
06 Good behaviour & Thai culture
Keep calm
Shouting, anger or arguing in public makes you “lose face” and makes problems worse — with police, landlords and shop owners. Smile and speak softly.
Head & feet
Never touch anyone’s head, even a child’s. Don’t point your feet at people or Buddha images, and don’t put feet on tables.
Temples
Cover shoulders and knees, take off shoes, speak quietly. Women must not touch monks or hand things to them directly.
Buddha images
Treat every Buddha image with respect — no climbing, posing disrespectfully or using them as decoration. Buddha tattoos can cause problems.
The wai
Thais greet with a wai (palms together). Return it to older people; a smile and nod is fine with shop staff.
Politics & religion
Avoid public political arguments, protests and religious debates. Foreigners can be deported for joining political activity.
Clean & quiet
No littering, spitting or smoking in no-smoking areas (many beaches, malls and public buildings) — fines are common.
Dress
Dress modestly in government offices, hospitals and temples. Swimwear only at the beach or pool.
Be a good guest
Pay your rent and bills on time, respect neighbours and follow building rules. How each of us behaves shapes how Thais see all Bangladeshis.
07 If you are in trouble
- Do not sign any document you do not understand, especially in Thai. Ask for an interpreter and call TBC.
- You can contact the Bangladesh Embassy in Bangkok if you are arrested or lose your passport.
This page is general information for the Bangladeshi community, not legal advice. Laws and fines change — last checked November 2026. For your own case, confirm with Thai Immigration, the Bangladesh Embassy or a licensed lawyer. Call the TBC hotline if you are unsure.
(Wai)
